The music and songs of Kurdish guitarist and composer Salar Salman, from Northern Iraq, are a mixture of virtuosic guitar playing, groovy drum machines and maqam synths. A collection of songs, influenced by his Kurdish heritage, that defy the oppression of Kurdish culture and, at the same time, stand in opposition to the Islamic bans of Western music. Recorded in cassettes and kept in a box in a closet since the 80’s, until his daughter brought them to light. His music is a mixture of psychedelic guitar music of the 70’s and traditional Kurdish song-writing.
