Jako Maron was born and raised on Réunion where maloya is the primary music genre, in this small island governed by the French Republic. It is a percussion-forward call-and-response style that lacks of harmonic elements. Using modular synthesizers and drum machines, Maron offers a completely unique take on maloya. The all-important 6/8 beat is at the core of his music, with electronic thuds, zips and pings standing in for hand drums and congas, while the usually vocal call-and-response elements are handed off to wheezing synthesizers.
